Classic Swing Golf School - McIlroy & Donald tee off for No. 1 at Players

Thursday, May 10, 2012 by Suzanne Burns

It's another beautiful day in Myrtle Beach SC!!!  We've had exceptionally beautiful weather here every day this week. If you live here or are just here to play one of our fine golf courses, get out and enjoy a round (or a golf lesson).  As far as golf instruction and training goes, Classic Swing Golf School has the program for you.

The big news this week is HE PLAYERS Championship. Luke Donald has a chance to grab the world No. 1 ranking back as he and Rory McIlroy go head-to-head.  Read below:

McIlroy, Donald continue fight for No. 1 at Players
    By Doug Ferguson

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Golf's world ranking has been more like a game of musical chairs with the most turnover at the top in the 26-year history of the ranking. Rory McIlroy and Luke Donald would like the music to stop playing for good sometime this year, the sooner the better. And both want the same outcome.

''Hopefully it will be me,'' Donald said Wednesday, raising his hand.

McIlroy said the same last week at Quail Hollow, where his playoff loss at the Wells Fargo Championship was enough for him to return to No. 1 for the third time this year.

Donald has a chance to take it back from him this week at The Players Championship, which offers the most world ranking points of any tournament besides the majors. They already have taken turns at the top six times in the last 10 weeks. The last time the No. 1 ranking was even remotely this volatile was in 1997, when it changed seven times in 13 weeks among Greg Norman, Tiger Woods, Tom Lehman and Ernie Els.

The Players Championship is a rare occasion for them to get together. Already four months into the season, McIlroy and Donald have only competed in the same tournament four times: the Abu Dhabi Championship, two World Golf Championships and the Masters.

''I think the last couple of months have not been as exciting because Rory and I really haven't been playing in the same events,'' Donald said. ''I think that will change a little bit, and hopefully there will be some situations coming up in the next few months where we'll be playing in the same tournament and both having a chance to win the tournament.''

As for a clear No. 1, Donald said that can only happen by winning a major or multiple tournaments - along with the other players not playing well.

The ranking shuffle speaks to a broader issue in golf. No one ever talked about the world ranking because there was no debate about No. 1.

There was no parity in golf. There was Tiger Woods.

In the 18 months since Woods abandoned his post atop the world ranking, four players have been No. 1: McIlroy, Donald, Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer. In the 30 months since injuries and the scandal in his personal life reduced Woods to an ordinary player, no one has won more than three times in a season on the PGA Tour. That used to be considered a slump for Woods.

''Do I think it's good for the game?'' Woods said of the current state of golf. ''I liked it when I was up there. That's just me.''

The edge going into The Players Championship belongs to McIlroy, the U.S. Open champion, based on consistency. Not only did he win the Honda Classic in early March to reach No. 1 for the first time, he has finished out of the top five only once this year. That was at the Masters, where he was one shot behind going into the weekend, closed with 77-76 and tied for 40th.

Donald, who got off to a slow start this year, has finished out of top 30 in five of his eight tournaments. He showed how determined he is to stay in the picture, though, by winning the Transitions Championship and rallying on the weekend to finish third in New Orleans.

Golf now heads into a time of the year where there will be ample opportunity for someone to establish himself as the clear No. 1, with The Players Championship, Memorial, Europe's flagship event at Wentworth, followed by three majors and a World Golf Championship. If that's not enough, Donald, McIlroy and Westwood – who at No. 3 also has a slim chance to get to No. 1 again this week at Sawgrass – are PGA Tour members and eligible for the FedEx Cup playoffs, which feature four strong fields at the end of the summer.

It all starts to unfold Thursday on a course that fittingly favors no one. The past winners on the Stadium Course at the TPC Sawgrass range from power (Woods, Norman, Phil Mickelson, David Duval) to precision (Tim Clark, Fred Funk, Hal Sutton).

McIlroy and Westwood skipped last year when they belonged to the same management company and were not PGA Tour members.

''It wasn't one of my brightest moments,'' McIlroy said. ''I'm glad to be back.''

The Players Championship typically boasts the deepest and strongest field in golf, though it gets just as much notoriety from the course on which it's played, particularly that island green on the par-3 17th that makes for great TV and becomes a smaller target depending on what's at stake.

Missing from the field is Masters champion Bubba Watson, who has pulled out of the last two tournaments so he can bond with the baby boy he and his wife in late March; Dustin Johnson, still recovering from a back injury; and 2011 Masters champion Charl Schwartzel.

Mickelson, a past champion at Sawgrass, is fresh off his induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame. Woods is coming off only the eighth missed cut of his career at Quail Hollow. Even in the best of times, Woods struggled on this golf course. He won in 2001, was the runner-up in 2000, but never seriously contended any of the other 12 times at The Players Championship.

''I've done really well or I haven't,'' Woods said. ''Either I've been right there in contention with a chance or I haven't.''

He was speaking of The Players Championship, though he just as easily could have been talking about his season. His win at Bay Hill in March at least got him back into the top 10 in the world, though even if he were to win his next two tournaments, he could not get to No. 1.

A Tip from Classic Swing Golf School - Focus on the mental game

Thursday, April 26, 2012 by Suzanne Burns

Good Thursday afternoon from Classic Swing!  We're having exceptionally beautiful and warm weather this week.  If you live here or are just visiting, get out and enjoy a round of golf (or a golf lesson).  There are plenty of courses to choose from; as far as lessons go, Classic Swing Golf School is the one to choose.

Now enjoy this tip from Ted that focuses on the mental game.

My personal library of books that discuss the mind are not golf specific. They are intended to enhance your life, and that includes the game of golf. If you see a sentence or two in quotes as you read the next few newsletters, then it is most likely a phrase that I highlighted when I read it because I found it to be meaningful and useful. For this month, let me simply introduce you to my top ten quotes relevant to performance. Over the next three months, I will go into more detail and discuss why these concepts are so important to your golf game!

Keys to Performance:

1) "Believing in yourself is paramount to success."-- Ben Crenshaw

2) "If you want to build mental muscle then you must train the mind like you train the body."--Ken Griffey

3) "Your mind influences how your body operates and not the other way around. Therefore, if you are concerned about how your body is functioning, focus on the mind." --Jason Kidd

4) "Words trigger pictures, pictures trigger action, so your action reflects your words."-- My preacher

5) "Overtrying leads to underperforming."-- Bob Rotella

6) "At times, we all get nervous and anxious. Learn to get comfortable with being uncomfortable."-- Phil Mickelson

7) "Limits begin where vision ends. Visualize success."-- Jack Nicklaus

8) "The mind is like a parachute, it only works when it is open." --Gary Mack

9) "Be your own best friend, not your own worst enemy. Get over yourself!"--Olga Korbut

10) "Tension is our number one enemy. We must play to have fun."--John Wooden

My personal library on mental training underscores that conditioning the mind is a daily process. Relaxation is the ultimate key in allowing one's physical talents to reach full potential. For this month, focus on breathing, light arms, and not taking each shot so seriously. Try to make enjoyment your reason for playing, no matter how important the round. Smile a lot!

Classic Swing Golf School - Read what others are saying

Thursday, April 12, 2012 by Suzanne Burns

Good afternoon once again from Classic Swing Golf School in Myrtle Beach!  Did everyone enjoy watching the Masters as much as I did?  I don't think there is a more beautiful course in the Spring than Augusta National.

Want to improve your game?  Classic Swing Golf School guarantees a maximum 3:1 student to teacher ratio in all golf schools and offers.

Read what others are saying about Classic Swing Golf School:

"My 14 year old son took private lessons from one of the pros while we were there in hopes of making his high school golf team when we returned home. Cost of the lessons was $30.00 per hour, and well worth it. Bryan had one on one instruction and his lessons often went over the time limit, with no extra charge. The pro, Eddie, also evaluated Bryan's clubs and did not try to sell us customized, expensive clubs, which are made on site here. His only recommendation was to shorten his putter, and he did that for us, free of charge.

Upon our return home, Bryan was one of only 3 freshman to make his high school golf team. I credit his lessons at Classic Swing for his success. We are returning this year and Bryan is once again taking lessons. Bryan was treated with respect and was not treated like a child. That meant a lot to him. Eddie and the rest of the staff treated us very well." - Ladybro Jan. 13

"I took lessons at the Classic Swing Golf School, located at the Legends Resort. The Legends Resort offers 54 holes of golf, and the instructors were outstanding. Fall lessons were reasonably priced.  Highly recommended!" - Al in VA Jan. 30

"I've been to a lot of golf schools and are good and some okay, but this was by far the best experience I've had; especially Ted who is just a phenomenal guy. We had a great time! - Lordvache July 7

Classic Swing Golf School - Enjoy the Masters

Thursday, April 5, 2012 by Suzanne Burns

Good day from Classic Swing Golf School.  We're having exceptionally beautiful and warm weather this week.  If you live here or are just visiting, get out and enjoy a round of golf (or a golf lesson).  There are plenty of courses to choose from; as far as lessons go, Classic Swing Golf School is the one to choose.

Now for what's happening.  It's finally here. Day 1 of the Masters Tournament.  Most golf fans in Myrtle Beach had their eyes on Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player as they hit the ceremonial first tee shots this morning in Augusta.  Then they provided insight into their experience:

“It was a great thrill, having this wonderful relationship, great friendship with Arnold and Jack for a long, long time,” Player said. “We’ve even cried together, and we’ve laughed together, and we’ve had good times.”

Who do you think hit the ball further off the first tee?

“I don’t think any of us can see that far,” Nicklaus quipped. “We can hear them all land though.”

They all hit the fairway; it was reported that Player drove his ball the furthest at 236 yards,  In case you're wondering, Nicklaus' drive was 218 yards and Palmer's 185 yards.  Gotta love those three legends.

Shortly after, Henrik Stenson made two eagles while Tiger Woods made two shots into the trees.  Both were on the leaderboard early in the first round of the Masters, but Stenson's position was much better.

Stenson then surged to 6-under par through the first 10 holes. Woods scrambled his way back from early mistakes to make the turn at 1 under, in a tie for sixth and trailing Stenson by five.

Under hopefully clear and sunny skies, the tradition continues.  Enjoy the Masters!

Classic Swing Golf School- Another Great Tip from Ted

Thursday, March 29, 2012 by Suzanne Burns

Hello again from Classic Swing Golf School!  We all know that body mechanics are extremely important so take this tip from Ted:

Improving a student's golf game is often a three-fold process for a teacher that focuses on the mind, body, and mechanics. This month, I will address the body. The first four months of 2011 I broke down the mechanics without a club and discussed the role of the pivot. Next month, I will concentrate on the mental part of this wonderful game. As I begin to describe this month's exercises, it must be noted that these stretches can be done while moving or stationary. Moving stretches (example: lunging while twisting) take into account balance, focus, and concentration. Stationary stretches involve moving into a position and holding this position which takes strength. For some readers, the following exercises may need to be done under the supervision or with the permission of a medical professional.

The torso is the area of the body from the hips to the shoulders. The torso plays a key role for generating power in the golf swing. The stretch shown in Picture # 1 (Half-Kneeling Long Turns) is a great exercise for improving and correcting torso rotation. Begin this exercise by getting into a half-kneeling position with the down knee on a comfortable cushion or folded towel. Next, hold each end of a golf club and move it overhead while keeping your posture as tall as possible. Once you are in this position, try to rotate the torso as far as possible to both the right and the left without moving the lower body. For thoracic mobility (stretching out the back), keep the arms extended while turning. Switch your down leg and repeat.

Another major area of focus in relation to power in the golf swing is the glutes. The important major muscles that surround the glutes are the quadriceps and hamstrings. For strength and flexibility to these key areas that surround the pelvis, use the stretch shown in Picture # 2 (Torso Turns with a Lunge). It is a simple lunge complimented with a twist. Once again, keep the arms fully extended for thoracic mobility, but in this exercise, keep your arms in front of your chest. The leg you lunge with is the side you rotate your chest over. Ten repetitions over each leg provide a good cardio workout as well.

Finally, I would like to focus on the core. Pelvic rotation is a stabilizer in the golf swing as the body moves the club into impact. For pelvic rotation improvement, try the Stork Turns shown in Picture # 3. To begin this exercise, stand on one leg and cross your arms over your chest. Hook one foot behind the knee of the down leg for support. Try to rotate the hips and shoulders back and forth for up to 25 seconds without losing your balance. Change your down leg and repeat. If you do not feel a burn in your belly, you are probably not performing this stretch correctly. No pain, no gain!

It is important to notice that in the Half-Kneeling Long Turns, we stretched the upper body but resisted with the lower body. During the Torso Turns with a Lunge, we mobilized both the upper and lower body and implemented some cardio. In the Stork Turns, we again moved both the lower body and the upper body. Hopefully one of these stretches, if not all three, will help your game. Next month, we will concentrate on mental aspects.

On another note, we have recently received some new summer apparel and have added it to our website. Please visit our Pro Shop page at https://classicswing.com/newcart to see the new items as well as some great deals on selected winter apparel in the clearance section. Classic Swing-Enjoy the Arnold Palmer Invitational

Friday, March 23, 2012 by Suzanne Burns

Good afternoon once again from Myrtle Beach!  Are you looking for a top rated, yet affordable golf training school?  Classic Swing Golf School has been coined as one of the most affordable golf schools in America.  Classic Swing Golf School has earned many accolades on which to hang its hat.  It's honorably distinguished as one of the "Top 25 Golf Schools in America" by Golf Magazine and was also voted "The Best Golf School in Myrtle Beach" in 2008.

The big news today is out of Orlando FL.  Enjoy!

By Bob Harig | ESPN.com
ORLANDO, Fla. -- Tiger Woods is off to a good start at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, shooting a 3-under-par 69 on Thursday to put himself among the early leaders during the first round.

Woods, who has won this tournament six times, made four birdies and a bogey at the Bay Hill Club. He trailed early leader Charlie Wi by three strokes as the afternoon rounds continued.

Woods hit the ball nicely in his first official event since withdrawing from the WGC-Cadillac Championship on March 11 with an Achilles strain. But he has reported no problems since resuming practice last week, and has now played five straight days of golf.

Tiger Woods Get all the latest news, highlights and commentary about the world's most talked-about golfer on ESPN.com. Tiger Tracker

"I'm just out there playing," Woods said. "I'm feeling good. I've been getting treatment. Everything's good. No swelling. If I can just keep it that way, everything will be great."

Woods hit 14 of 18 greens but needed 32 putts. Still, he was tied for third after the morning wave.

Woods was tied with Sean O'Hair, Anthony Kim, Justin Rose, K.J. Choi, Andres Romero and Jimmy Walker.

Nick Watney shot a 68 to finish two strokes behind Wi, who has never won on the PGA Tour.

Ernie Els, who missed a playoff by a stroke last week when he bogey the final two holes at the Transitions Championship, played with Woods and shot 71. Phil Mickelson, playing in the group behind Woods, shot 73.

"It was a day I didn't really do anything great," Woods said. "I was just solid all day. I drove the ball well. Hit my irons decent and putted all right. I had two three-putts, but also made a couple bombs out there. It's just one of those days where not a lot (was) going on."

It will be Woods' final tune-up before the Masters, which begins in two weeks. He visited Augusta National on Sunday and brought along caddie Joe LaCava for a practice round.

"It was typical Augusta non-championship week," said Woods of his practice round at Augusta. "It's a bit slower, a little bit more wet. It played really long. Come tournament time it changes from Wednesday to Thursday."

Classic Swing Golf School- A Tip from Ted

Thursday, March 15, 2012 by Suzanne Burns

Hi again from Classic Swing Golf School!  We all know it is extremely important that the feet and knees work together so take this tip from Ted:

The topic of this tip is to address the pivot from the ground up by discussing proper training of the feet and the knees. Please be reminded that I am writing these articles as a right-handed golfer.

In the golf swing, the footwork accommodates the knee action so, while these two body parts are independent components, they must work together. The feet are the great supporters of the energy transfer in the dynamic motion of swinging a golf club. Obviously, the feet are also the only part of the body in contact with the ground so their main responsibility is to assist with the weight shift and provide balance. There are many variations to footwork in the golf swing, and I will be illustrating their role in the ideal world.

The golf swing is just like a new dance step in that the feet need to be trained! In an ideal world, the heels come off the ground due to momentum, therefore, any lifting of the heels in the backswing is an involuntary motion that needs to be controlled (trained) and prevented (See Picture #1, Ideal Footwork and Knee Action in the Backswing). As you begin to bring the club down in the downswing, both feet should be on the ground. Remember, momentum pulls the heels off the ground, and ideally, the right heel responds only during impact to the momentum of the swing and plays a key role in transferring weight through the finish as it allows for balance (See Picture #2).

The feet accommodate the knees, and the knees accommodate the hips. In the ideal world, the knees provide flexibility to the hips and set the hips for their essential role of providing power. The key to proper knee action is that the right knee should remain fixed and flexed in the backswing (See Picture #1). The left knee should begin to straighten during the downswing as the club is coming into the impact zone. At impact, the right heel is beginning to be pulled off the ground by the momentum of the swing as the left leg is almost straight (See Picture #3).

To review, keep both heels on the ground and the right knee fixed and flexed in the backswing. Keep both heels on the ground and allow the left leg to begin to straighten in the downswing. Now train the right foot to swivel and finish tall with a smile! For my instructional DVD viewers, key on the pivot stretches to the finish especially in the driver section. Next month, I will go right to the core and discuss the role of the hips.

A Tip from Classic Swing Golf School - Power Generators

Thursday, March 1, 2012 by Suzanne Burns

Good afternoon from Classic Swing Golf School!  The temperatures have been very pleasant this week so I hope you've been out!  Today, I hope you enjoy this golf tip from Ted at the School.

Power Generators:

Centripetal force is defined as an inward pulling force. In golf terminology, this means the big muscles move the small muscles. In other words, the dog wags the tail, not vice versa. Another way to describe this force is the inside moves the outside. Your hips are the key components for power in the golf swing. Therefore, you need to learn to rotate your hips correctly to maximize power in the golf swing! As the old saying in life goes, "Use it or lose it."

pp

The hips play a significant role in the golf swing in that they are the axis that we rotate around in the backswing and in the downswing. When you transfer energy in the backswing, the right hip becomes the axis for rotation and weight shift. The hips will turn, sometimes up to forty degrees, going back. There will also be a lateral slide of up to one inch in the backswing to shift the axis to the right hip from our original address position (See Picture #1-Address and Picture #2 - Weight Shift in Backswing). The right hip, the flexed right knee, and the right ankle all appear to almost line up at the top of the backswing, as seen in Picture #2. There must be lateral movement and a turn of the hips in the backswing!

ppp

In the downswing, there will be a lateral shift of up to four inches towards the target which moves the axis for rotation into the left hip. As the hips make their lateral shift, they will rotate in excess of ninety degrees. This is when we can see the effect of 'the dog wagging the tail' (See Picture #3). The lateral movement of the downswing combined with rotation provides the transfer of power in the golf swing so the faster the hip action, the more energy that is transferred to the clubhead and eventually the ball.

pppp

The role of the pivot is also accentuated in the chip, pitch and driving portions of my instructional DVD, "From Putt to Drive." Next month, I will put all five components of the pivot together, and in May, I will describe some moving stretches that will get the hips back into your game. Until then, grab a hula hoop and learn to do the hula hula to improve your hip action!

Golf offers up Match Play

Thursday, February 23, 2012 by Suzanne Burns
Good Thursday afternoon from Classic Swing!  We're having exceptionally beautiful and warm weather this week.  If you live here or are just visiting, get out and enjoy a round of golf (or a golf lesson).  There are plenty of courses to choose from; as far as lessons go, Classic Swing Golf School is the one to choose.  More on that later, golf fans this week are keeping their eyes on the Accenture Match Play Competition.

Read what By Doug Ferguson wrote after day 2:

MARANA, Ariz. (AP) The good Tiger Woods knocked in a 50-foot birdie putt and drove onto the par-4 15th green, both times to erase a deficit. The bad Tiger Woods took three trips into the desert to lose the hole, once having to hit a shot left-handed.

After all these adventures, Woods had no trouble picking the most important shot he had Wednesday in the Match Play Championship.

"Probably the putt on 18," he said.

It was an 8-foot putt up the hill. It gave him a par, and a hard-earned win over Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano in the opening round. And it allowed him to return Thursday to Dove Mountain, the only objective at this wild tournament.

Luke Donald won't have that privilege.

For the first time since he first qualified for this World Golf Championship in 2005, the world's No. 1 player was beaten in the first round. There is no such thing as an upset, not even for the No. 1 seed, given the 18-hole match and the quality of players.

Only a year ago, Donald turned in the most dominant performance ever in the Match Play Championship. He never trailed the entire week, and none of his matches ever reached the 18th hole.  Turns out Donald won't be playing the 18th hole this week, either.

Everyone feels pressure at some point. Such is the nature of match play.

aaa

Rory McIlroy was feeling it right after Donald left the course. The U.S. Open champion seized control by winning four straight holes, and he was 3 up with three holes to play. Then came a bogey on the 16th, and the 17th. Suddenly, he was 1 up and playing the 18th hole against George Coetzee, and he popped up his tee shot that made par a challenge.  Luckily for McIlroy, his opponent failed to take advantage. Coetzee went 60 feet by the pin on his approach and three-putted for bogey. So McIlroy escaped, and with Donald out of the way, the 22-year-old from Northern Ireland had a clear path to No. 1.

So does Lee Westwood, who played a tidy round in beating Nicolas Colsaerts.

McIlroy and Westwood could replace Donald atop the world ranking by winning the Match Play Championship.

Woods was 1 down until he drove the 15th green for a two-putt birdie, won the 16th with a par to go 1 up, and got up-and-down from a bunker after he missed the green from the 18th fairway.  "We both made our share of mistakes, there's no doubt about that," said Woods. "But somehow, I was able to move on."

Woods now plays Nick Watney, who had no trouble beating British Open champion Darren Clarke.

McIlroy, the highest seed remaining, faces Anders Hansen, while Westwood plays Robert Karlsson and No. 4 seed Martin Kaymer faces David Toms, who birdied the last hole to secure a win over Rickie Fowler.

Perhaps the most intriguing match is Kyle Stanley and Brandt Snedeker, who have been in a match play situation before. It was only a month ago when Stanley made triple bogey on the last hole at Torrey Pines, then lost in a playoff to Snedeker.  Stanley went on to win the next week in Phoenix.

There will be three All-American matches, three all-European matches and one all-Australian match. That would be John Senden against Day, and the only downer for the boys Down Under is that they're the only Australians left at Dove Mountain.

Hips are the key components for power in the golf swing.

Friday, February 17, 2012 by Suzanne Burns
Good day from Classic Swing Golf School!  It's hard to believe we are half way through February.  I don't know about anyone else but I thoroughly love these mild temperatures.  As I pass by our area's golf courses, I see a lot of activity as folks take advantage of off season prices and specials.  Why not take this time for a golf lesson from Classic Swing's professional instructors?

ccc

The following is a tip from Ted Frick, Owner/Director of Instruction at at Classic Swing:

I want to discuss the hips and their role in the golf swing. Energy transfer and centripetal force will be used to help describe the role of the hips as power generators.

Enjoy the Pebble Beach Pro Am

Friday, February 17, 2012 by Suzanne Burns
Hello again from Classic Swing Golf School in Myrtle Beach South Carolina.  It's tournament time again! This week, golfers who are working to improve their golf swing will also be watching the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.  This tournament, considered by many to be one of the top courses on the PGA Tour schedule begins today and continues through Sunday.  Here's a a little primer to get you prepared:

aaa

AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am
February 9-12, 2012
by Jonathan Wall | Devil Ball Golf

"*******"The course: Ah, Pebble Beach, there really isn't a whole lot you can say about the famed course that hasn't been said before, except that it's one of golf's most prized jewels. Designed by Jack Neville and Douglas Grant, the par 72 course plays 6,816 yards and houses some of the greatest holes in golf. The par-3 7th hole -- measuring only 106 yards -- starts a three-hole stretch that could be one of the best in golf and offers some incredible views of Carmel Bay. The back nine also has a couple of decent finishing holes, starting with the par-3 17th, a hole best known for Tom Watson's chip-in during the 1982 U.S. Open. The course finishes with one of the best par 5's in golf, as players will be tempted to take it over Stillwater Cove on the 543-yard hole, which should set up a chance to go for the green in two.

Monterey Peninsula (par 70 / 6,838 yards) and Spyglass Hill GC (par 72 / 6,858 yards) round out the Pro-Am's three-course rotation. Monterey was added to the tournament in 2010, when tournament officials decided to drop Poppy Hills -- some pros wouldn't play the tournament with Poppy in the rotation, including Tiger Woods -- from the event.

********The schedule: The tournament runs Thursday-Sunday. It'll be broadcast on the Golf Channel from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. ET on Thursday and Friday,  and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Sunday on CBS.

********The field: Pebble Beach not only draws some of the top celebrities in the world each year to play in the event, it also does a decent job drawing in some of golf's top names. Two of the top 15 in the Official World Golf Rankings are playing at Pebble this week, but the big name headlining the event has to be Tiger Woods. Making his return to the Pro-Am for the first time since 2002, Woods will start his PGA Tour season off at Pebble looking for his first official win in more than two years. Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler and Hunter Mahan round out a solid field."

Golfers are Grooving to Rucker

Friday, February 3, 2012 by Suzanne Burns
Good afternoon from Classic Swing Golf School in Myrtle Beach!  Ted and his teaching pros are ready to help you improve at golf.  Take advantage of this beautiful weather and sign up for lessons.  Have you ever wondered if music could help "smooth out" golf swing?  I mean what if it true that musical rhythms get your golf swing "in the groove"?  While you're thinking about that, read this article:

dd

By TOM BARTON/The Island Packet

"Award-winning country musician and Charleston native Darius Rucker, better known as the lead singer of Hootie and the Blowfish, plans to help bring a women's intercollegiate golf tournament and private concert to Hilton Head Island.

Long Cove Club announced Wednesday it will host the inaugural Darius Rucker Intercollegiate tournament on its Pete Dye-designed course March 1-4, in partnership with the University of South Carolina.

The tournament will be sponsored by Hargray.

Fifteen collegiate women's teams will travel to Hilton Head to compete in what tournament chairman Staunton Oppenheimer said "will be a signature event on the women's collegiate schedule."

Rucker, USC and Long Cove Club have committed to hosting the tournament through 2016, according to a news release.

"This is high-end golf. This will bring good exposure for women's golf in general," Long Cove general manager David Loan said. "There are some highly ranked players who will be playing in this event."

Four recently announced 2012 U.S. Curtis Cup team members will represent their universities at the tournament, Loan said. The Curtis Cup -- the women's equivalent of the Walker Cup -- is a biennial competition pitting the top female amateurs from the U.S. against a team of top amateurs from Great Britain and Ireland.

The event was the brainchild of Long Cove's head professional, Bob Patton, and his long-time friend Puggy Blackmon, USC's director of golf and a Ridgeland native.

Long Cove Club stepped in on short notice to host a tournament for most of the men's teams that had committed to a 2001 Rolex Golf World Palmetto Dunes Collegiate Invitational. That long-standing tournament folded after Golf World withdrew its sponsorship.

Long Cove did not conduct the tournament again in 2002, however.

"Since then, we've had a lot of ideas to bring a college tournament back to Long Cove Club," Patton said.

In a conversation with Patton about a year ago, Blackmon lamented the lack of high-profile women's collegiate golf events.

"There really isn't a women's collegiate event that stands out head-and-shoulders above the rest," Patton said.

Blackmon contacted Rucker, an avid golfer and former USC student. He agreed to lend his name to the event and play a private concert for tournament players, coaches, sponsors, guests and Long Cove members.

Tickets for the March 1 performance at the 350-seat Arts Center of Coastal Carolina are sold out.

"(Darius) was a supporter of the Lady Gamecock Classic, another collegiate event hosted by USC that was held in Columbia for several years," Chris Carney, who works in Rucker's Columbia-based office, wrote in an email. "He's very excited that the event is being hosted by the great folks at Long Cove Club and Hilton Head Island."

Rucker and his former bandmates have hosted a popular celebrity pro-am in South Carolina for the past 17 years, drawing big names in golf and entertainment.

The 18th annual Hootie and the Blowfish Monday After The Masters Celebrity Pro-Am Golf Tournament is set for April 9 in Myrtle Beach. The tournament has donated more than $4.5 million to the band's foundation, which supports education and the S.C. Junior Golf Foundation.

Hootie & the Blowfish also host a men's collegiate golf event at the Bulls Bay Golf Club in Awendaw just outside of Charleston."

Enjoy the music when you can and when in Myrtle Beach be sure to check out some golf lessons at Classic Swing!

Enjoy this Golf Tip from Ted Frick at the Classic Swing Golf School in Myrtle Beach: Secondary Tilt

Thursday, January 26, 2012 by Suzanne Burns
Hi again from Myrtle Beach!  We all know that even great golfers sometimes fail on their positioning.  Take this tip from Ted:

Secondary Tilt

Before we dive into the tip for the month, let me give you a recap of my educational experiences in January. The Golfing Machine Teaching Summit on January 25 and 26 was two full days of physics and geometry and its application to the golf stroke. One of the highlights of the summit was on the subject of putting, and I will share the facts I learned about the putting stroke with you later this year. As a small hint, I will tell you to work on your touch! My online coursework as a current Class 'A' PGA Member is complete and my final exam for certification is scheduled for Friday, March 19.

Following the summit, I headed to the PGA show in Orlando where I met Royce, our golf club technician. We did three full days of R&D, and confirmed that all of our technology, components, shafts, club fitting procedures, etc. are up to date. Over the course of the three days, we hit all of the latest and greatest in golf club components. The shaft is still the engine of the club no matter the head. Graphite shafted irons go further than steel because they are lighter. Hybrids are here to stay because the Moment of Inertia (MOI) is so high that you cannot replace their forgiveness. Also, the center of gravity is moving higher in the driver so everyone could benefit from a driver with a higher loft.

To continue with the moment of truth topic discussed in January, let's look closer at the impact position. In January, we highlighted the lower part of the trunk and the need to keep the hips back, down, and turning. For February, I will highlight the upper part of the body with specific detail to the back shoulder.

At address, the back shoulder is set lower than the front shoulder because the corresponding hand is lower on the club. At the top of the backswing, the back shoulder rotates around the spine, and if possible, completes it's rotation behind the ear. Therefore, flexibility in the lats, traps, deltoids and chest are helpful for a good turn. So what does this all have to do with impact? The answer is that you want to increase your tilt into the ball from the top of the backswing. Imagine that your trailing shoulder is dropping down into your hip pocket in the start down. At impact, the back shoulder should be lower than it was at address. This keeps your head behind the ball.

At address, the spine tilts two ways:

     1) Primary Tilt - Over the ball, bottom back and chest over toes.

iii

     2) Secondary Tilt - To the rear with back shoulder back and down.

iii

In the downswing and moving into impact, you increase your secondary tilt with what is referred to as axis tilt.

ii

2012 Pebble Beach Pro-Am Organizing

Thursday, January 19, 2012 by Suzanne Burns
Good afternoon from Myrtle Beach SC!!!  We're having exceptionally beautiful weather and seasonal temperatures here this week.  If you live here or are just visiting, get out and enjoy a round of golf (or a golf lesson).  There are plenty of courses to choose from; as far as golf instruction and training goes, Classic Swing Golf School has the program for you.

More on that later, first I want to mention the big news this week.  Tiger Woods has agreed to play the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am for the first time since 2002. The February 9-12 event will be Woods first US event in 2012.
aaa

Great sports events often come down to great matchups and the organizers of the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am are looking to create one.  According to one report, the tournament wants to team up Tiger Woods with Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow.

Brian Hewitt of GlobalGolfPost reported that according to a highly placed source at the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, the tournament is strongly considering issuing an invitation to Tebow.

Initial reports from the Pro Am had Woods paired him with Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.  While that sounds intriguing, some things have to happen first. Woods and Tebow would have to agree to it and Tebow would first have to agree to play in the event.

Tebow and the Broncos are preparing for a Saturday night AFC divisional playoff game with the New England Patriots.

Should the Broncos beat the Patriots, Tebow-hysteria would grow and likely make the Pebble Beach organizers try even harder for the Tebow-Woods pairing. Also expected to play is Tom Brady.

The Super Bowl will be played Feb. 5. The AT&T is scheduled for the following weekend.

It has been a while since there was so much interest and anticipation in the field for the Pro-Am.  The pairings aren’t set to be announced until Feb. 7, the Tuesday of tournament week. Nutt, president and CEO of the Monterey Peninsula Foundation, said the tournament has been in touch with Tebow, and hopes to hear by the end of the week if he accepts the invitation to play.

Pebble Beach regular star Bill Murray stole the spotlight last year when he teamed with D.A. Points, who captured his first PGA Tour event.

We'll just have to wait and see.  I know Hubby and I will be waiting and  watching.  Speaking of waiting, with patience and the correct golf instruction, you can improve your game.  The best can be found and Classic Swing.  Voted one of the 25 top Golf Schools in the country, you will receive the best golf swing instruction.  Visit www.classicswing.com for more information

In the News: The First Tee of Myrtle Beach

Thursday, December 29, 2011 by Suzanne Burns
It's a beautiful day in Myrtle Beach!  It's the last week of 2011 and the golf instructors at Classic Swing Golf School wish you a Happy and Prosperous New Year!

The future is bright and Classic Swing will continue to help lower the handicaps of weekend players, fine tune the skills of advanced players, and give beginners the fundamentals necessary for a future of enjoyable golf.  Speaking of the future, please read these excerpts from today's Sun News:

"The future for The First Tee of Myrtle Beach has never looked more promising, and it includes a new name, broader reach and new leadership. The local chapter of the youth development organization will merge Sunday with The First Tee of Brunswick County, which will take over operational control of its southern neighbor.

First Tee of Brunswick County has become a model of success for the 200-chapter First Tee organization in less than six years of existence.  Carol and Rusty Petrea founded the First Tee of Brunswick County in February 2006.  Both that chapter and the newly named First Tee of The Grand Strand – a title that reflects the expanded targeting of youth in both Horry and Georgetown counties – will be under the umbrella of the nonprofit Carol S. Petrea Youth Golf Foundation based in Ocean Isle Beach, N.C..

The First Tee is a youth development program created in 1997 that teaches life skills as well as golf skills, stressing nine core values.

First Tee Myrtle Beach chairman of the board Robert Harper thinks the Petreas are great leaders who will do right in assisting his chapter as it aligns and merges with Brunswick County.

Myrtle Beach program director Ryan Hart, who has largely been responsible for any gains made by the chapter in the past couple years.  Hart said the Myrtle Beach chapter has about 30 volunteers, though most are students at The Golf Academy of America’s local campus and only about a dozen are long-term mentors. The Brunswick County chapter has approximately 400 volunteers.Harper said about 700 volunteers will be needed by 2017 if the Grand Strand chapter is to achieve its stated goal of reaching at least 25,000 kids per year by then.

ff

In addition to after-school, weekend and summer sessions, the Myrtle Beach and Brunswick County chapters each teach The First Tee curriculum in physical education classes in 10 public schools through The First Tee National Schools Program.

Hart will be focusing on volunteer recruitment, with an emphasis on the Strand’s large retired population. “We want to see locals serving locals,” Hart said.Martin’s PGA Tour Superstore in North Myrtle Beach has donated office space for The First Tee of The Grand Strand’s headquarters, and the stores have committed to further help the organization.

Read more about this amazing project in later posts.  Again, Ted and the gang at Classic Swing give you all sincere hopes for the New Year.  The "Winter Special"  runs through February.  Every Monday and Thursday from 8:20am to 12:30pm, three day school sessions are $199. and a one day session is $75.  Gift certificates are also available.
